Launch of IACPT
Plants have been cultivated for millennia for agricultural, forestry and horticultural purposes, yet it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain clarity and understanding in the science of naming cultivated plants. The value of knowing a plant's precise name and understanding its origin, development, description, classification and performance potential is steadily increasing, though it is often underestimated. Stability and harmonization in cultivated plant names can be achieved only with clear and widely accessible information. This will facilitate communication about the plants and improve their introduction, breeding, production, and conservation, which are all crucial to human life. To provide leadership in this area, a new organization, the International Association for Cultivated Plant Taxonomy (IACPT), has been launched in Wageningen, The Netherlands on 18 October 2007 during the 5th International Symposium on the Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants. This Association seeks to promote the field of taxonomy and nomenclature of cultivated plants and to encourage international relations among individuals and institutions interested in this field and related disciplines. Its members will include taxonomists who work on cultivated plants, international cultivar registration authorities, representatives of plant breeders rights authorities, plant breeders, crop scientists, agriculturists, foresters and horticulturists, plant physiologists and others. To achieve its goals, the IACPT is expected to sponsor symposia, publish a journal dedicated to cultivated plant taxonomy, develop databases and on-line resources for improving stability in the nomenclature of cultivated plants and to be a vehicle for discussion of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) and provide advice to queries on its implementation. Sinds mensenheugenis worden planten geteeld voor landbouw-, bosbouw- en tuinbouwkundige doeleinden. Door toenemende communicatie en steeds grotere aantallen cultuurplanten lijkt het ingewikkelder te worden om duidelijkheid te verschaffen over naamgeving van deze planten. De correcte naam van een plant biedt toegang tot informatie over diens herkomst, ontwikkeling, beschrijving, classificatie en potentiële gebruikswaarde en is daardoor van toenemend belang. Stabiliteit en harmonisering in de naamgeving van cultuurplanten kan alleen bereikt worden door middel van duidelijke en algemeen toegankelijke informatie. Dit komt communicatie over planten ten goede hetgeen van essentieel belang is voor hun veredeling, introductie, productie en bewaring. De Internationale Associatie voor Cultuurplanten Taxonomie (International Association for Cultivated Plant Taxonomie (IACPT)) is opgericht in Wageningen op 18 oktober 2007 tijdens het vijfde Internationale Symposium over de Taxonomie van Cultuurplanten om initiatieven te nemen op dit terrein. De IACPT heeft als doel de taxonomie en nomenclatuur van cultuurplanten te bevorderen. Internationale samenwerking, zowel individueel als op organisatieniveau, zal worden gestimuleerd. La valeur de la connaissance du nom précis d’une plante et la compréhension des ses origine, développement, description, classification et performance potentielle augment nettement, bien qu’on la sous-estime souvent. La stabilité et l’harmonisation des noms de plantes cultivées ne peut être atteint qu’avec une information claire et largement accessible. Ceci facilitera la communication à propos des plantes et améliorera leur introduction, sélection, production et conservation, qui sont toutes cruciales pour la vie humaine. Afin d’assurer un leadership dans ce domaine, une nouvelle organisation, l’International Association for Cultivated Plant Taxonomy (IACPT) a été lancée à Wageningen, Pays-Bas, le 18 octobre 2007 au cours du 5ème symposium international sur la taxinomie des plantes cultivées.
